History
Adršpach-Teplice Rocks are estimated to be over 89 million years old. Back then the whole area was the bottom of a prehistoric ocean, but during the Lower Palaeozoic Era, a depression appeared there, in which the sea and rivers left behind their deposition. Over the following years, the sea withdrew a couple of times and the land was lifted and eroded. During the Lower Mesozoic Era, the sea returned and accumulated sand and calcareous clay on the seabed. Under the influence of weight and chemical processes, the loose grains of sand joined into a rock called sandstone. When the sea retreated the place that was left behind became today’s Adršpach-Teplice Rocks. The natural elements, such as frosts, running water, the wind, and the sun came into play and formed the sandstone rocks into what they look like now.

The legend of the enchantment
Scientifically speaking, Adršpach-Teplice Rocks were created by water. However, there's a legend, that presents us with another origin story of the City of Rocks. According to it, it was the gods’ anger that formed the City of Rocks. The gods punished the residents of the ancient towns for allowing robbers onto the rich, Czech lands. As a result, the gods bewitched both the people and their towns, turning them all to stone.
